What is it used for?
Evista is used for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in women who are past menopause or after hysterectomy.
Contraindications and cautions:
You must not take Evista if you have the following health conditions:
- hypersensitivity to any ingredient of Evista;
- child-bearing age;
- pregnancy;
- breast-feeding;
- thrombembolia (including cases in past medical history);
- deep venous thrombosis;
- pulmonary embolism;
- retinal vein thrombosis;
- compromised liver function;
- prolonged immobilization;
Side effects:
- hot flushes;
- cramp in legs;
- thrombembolia;
- deep venous thrombosis;
- retinal vein thrombosis;
- pulmonary embolism;
- peripheral edema;
Interactions:
Before beginning to use Evista consult with your doctor, and tell him what other prescribed and over-the-counter medicines you use, because certain medicines may interact with Evista. Some of them are:
- birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy;
- diazepam (Valium);
- a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin);
- diazoxide (Proglycem);
- cholestyramine (Questran, Prevalite);
- ibuprofen;
- indomethacin;
Special instructions:
- Taking Evista together with estrogens is not recommended.
- In case a patient have to be immobilized for a long time (e.g., due to some disease), taking Evista should be stopped until complete mobility of the patient.
