Therapeutic actions:
Acomplia acts by selectively blocking CB1 receptors found in the brain and in peripheral organs important in glucose and lipid (or fat) metabolism, including adipose tissue, the liver, gastrointestinal tract and muscle.

What is it used for?
• Acomplia is used complementary to diet and exercise to treat obese or overweight patients who suffer from Type 2 diabetes and abnormal levels of fat in the blood.
• Sanofi argues that Acomplia can also prevent the risk of cardiovascular disease.
• Patients with large waist circumference will mostly benefit from taking the drug.
Contraindications and cautions:
Do not take ACOMPLIA
• if you currently suffer from depression
• if you are currently being treated for depression
• if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to rimonabant, or any of the other ingredients of ACOMPLIA
• if you are breast-feeding.
• Take special care with ACOMPLIA
Tell your doctor before you start to take this medicine:
• if you have previously suffered from depression or have had suicidal thoughts.
• if you have impaired liver function
• if you have severely impaired renal function
• if you are currently being treated for epilepsy
• if you are less than 18 years of age. There is no information available on the use of ACOMPLIA in people under 18 years of age.
Side effects:
All drugs have side effects, and Acomplia is no exception. Some of the side effects are beneficial - such as the altered blood lipid profile. However, there are other known side effects that may influence whether or not you continue to take the drug.
1. Nausea and vomitting
2. Disorders of the nervous system
This category includes headaches, faintness and feeling dizzy.
3. Psychiatric disorders
Including mood swings, anxiety, depression, irritability, sleep disorders and other similar disorders. The current advice is that you should not take this drug if you suffer from mental health problems. Tthe drug is not suitable for those with continuing major depressive illness and/or antidepressive treatment.
Interactions: The activity of ACOMPLIA is increased by simultaneous use of some drugs (so-called CYP3A4 inhibitors) such as:
• itraconazole (antifungal medicine)
• ketaconazole (antifungal medicine)
• ritonavir (medicine for the treatment of HIV infections)
• telithromycin (antibiotic)
• clarithromycin (antibiotic)
• nefazodone (anti-depressor)
Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken the above mentioned medicines or any other medicines, including those obtained without a prescription such as St John’s wort, rifampicin (antibiotic), medicines for weight loss, medicines to improve blood lipids (fats), antidiabetes medicines and medicines to treat epilepsy (e.g. phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine) or depression.
