What is it used for?
The combination of these medicines is used primarily to relieve headaches accompanied by an upset stomach, such as occurs after over-indulgence in food, drink or both. It can also be used to relieve various other types of aches and pains such as migraine, period pains, toothache, sore throats, rheumatic pain, back pain and sprains or strains, and to relieve symptoms associated with colds and flu, such as headache, feverishness and muscular aches and pains.
Contraindications and cautions:
Do not take Alka-Seltzer XS if:
• you are allergic to aspirin, paracetamol or any other pain relieving or anti-inflammatory medicines e.g. NSAIDs or salicylates. The allergic reaction may be displayed as an asthma attack when you have taken any of these medicines.
• you are allergic to any of the other ingredients in this product.
• you have, or have ever had, a stomach or duodenal ulcer.
• you have a bleeding disorder such as haemophilia.
• you are on a high dose of methotrexate, 15mg per week. If you are not sure, check with your doctor. Methotrexate is used for psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease and some types of cancer.
• You are pregnant or breast-feeding, unless advised by your doctor.
There is a possible association between aspirin and Reye’s syndrome when given to children.
Speak to your doctor if:
• You suffer from tightness in the chest or asthma.
• You are pregnant, breast-feeding or trying for a baby.
• You have kidney or liver problems or are aware you have a low uric acid excretion, which is commonly associated with gout.
• You have a history of gastrointestinal disorders (regular stomach upsets).
Avoid taking alcohol at the same time as Alka-Seltzer XS.
Side effects:
Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.
• Irritation to the lining or movements of the gut
• Allergic reactions such as skin rash, swelling of the lips, tongue and throat (angioedema) or narrowing of the airways (bronchospasm)
• Blackening of the stools
• Disturbances of the gut such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or abdominal pain
The side effects listed above may not include all of the side effects reported by the drug's manufacturer.
Interactions: Alka-Seltzer can interact with the following medicines:
• medication to prevent blood clotting (e.g. warfarin, heparin, ticlopidine), to lower blood sugar if you are a diabetic (e.g. insulin, sulphonylureas), to treat gout or reduce water retention.
• medication because of heart problems or to lower blood pressure (e.g. ACE inhibitors)
• medication containing corticosteroids, any pain-relieving or anti-inflammatory medicines.
• medicines methotrexate, digoxin, sodium valproate, phenytoin, metoclopramide, domperidone or cholestyramine.

Why are branded medicines that you sell so cheap?
