What is it used for?
Celebrex is used : 1. For relief of the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis. 2. For relief of the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis in adults. 3. For relief of the signs and symptoms of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in patients 2 years and older. 4. For the relief of signs and symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis. 5. For the management of acute pain in adults. 6. For the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea. 7. To reduce the number of adenomatous colorectal polyps in familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), as an adjunct to usual care (e.g., endoscopic surveillance, surgery). Contraindications and cautions: Like other NSAID medication, Celebrex could increase the chance of having a heart attack or stroke, possibly resulting in death. The risk is greater if you have heart disease or use NSAIDs for a long time. It's important to discuss the risks and benefits of using Celebrex with your doctor and to use the lowest effective dose for the shortest amount of time possible. Although Celebrex is easy on the stomach, it still poses some degree of risk—especially if you've had a stomach ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding in the past. All NSAIDs, including Celebrex, can cause serious—and even life-threatening—ulcers and bleeding in the stomach and intestines. These side effects can happen without symptoms and may occur at any time during treatment. If you've ever had ulcers or stomach bleeding, make sure the doctor is aware of it. And be sure to alert the doctor if you develop any digestive problems or notice a change in your bowel movement (such as blood in the stool or black, sticky stools). Do not drink alcohol while taking Celebrex. Alcohol can increase the risk of stomach bleeding caused by Celebrex. Do not use any other over-the-counter cold, allergy, or pain medication without first asking your doctor or pharmacist. Many medicines available over the counter contain aspirin or other medicines similar toCelebrex (such as ibuprofen, ketoprofen, or naproxen). If you take certain products together you may accidentally take too much of this type of medication. Read the label of any other medicine you are using to see if it contains aspirin, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, or naproxen. Side effects: Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop taking Celebrex and seek medical attention or call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects: • chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, slurred speech, problems with vision or balance; • black, bloody, or tarry stools; • coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds; • swelling or rapid weight gain; • urinating less than usual or not at all; • nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); • fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash; or • bruising, severe tingling, numbness, pain, muscle weakness. Less serious side effect may include: • upset stomach, mild heartburn, diarrhea, constipation; • bloating, gas; • dizziness, nervousness, headache; • skin rash, itching; • blurred vision; or • ringing in your ears. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect. Interactions: Before taking Celebrex, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs: • aspirin or other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as diclofenac (Voltaren), etodolac (Lodine), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), ketoprofen (Orudis), ketorolac (Toradol), meloxicam (Mobic), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn), and others; • a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin); • diuretics (water pills) such as furosemide (Lasix); • lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid); • methotrexate (Rheumatrex, Trexall); or • an ACE inhibitor such as benazepril (Lotensin), captopril (Capoten), fosinopril (Monopril), enalapril (Vasotec), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), moexipril (Univasc), perindopril (Aceon), quinapril (Accupril), ramipril (Altace), or trandolapril (Mavik). This is not a complete list and there may be other drugs that can interact with Celebrex. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.
