What is it used for?
Danazol is used for treatment of:
- endometriosis (with associated infertility);
- nonmalignant mammary neoplasms (chronic cystic mastitis, fibrocystic breast disease);
- primary menorrhagia;
- premenstrual syndrome;
- primary precocious sexual development;
- gynecomastia;
- hereditary angioedema;
Contraindications and cautions:
- hypersensitivity to any ingredient of Danazol;
- pregnancy and breast-feeding;
- porphyria;
- hepatic and/or renal insufficiency;
- chronic heart failure;
- thrombembolia;
- androgen-dependant tumors;
- unexplained vaginal bleeding.
Patients with the following health conditions must be closely supervised when treated with Danazol:
- diabetes mellitus;
- epilepsy;
- migraine;
Side effects:
- acne vulgaris;
- oil glands hypersecretion;
- body fluids retention;
- hirsutism (excessive hairiness in women);
- hot blushes;
- profuse sweat;
- breasts size reduction;
- coarsening of voice;
- weight gain;
- vaginitis;
- spermatogenesis disorder;
- masculinity (virilism);
- nausea;
- dizziness;
- emotional instability;
- skeletal muscles spasm;
- headache;
- increase of intracranial pressure;
- lumbodynia;
- paresthesia;
- sleep disturbances;
- impairment of vision;
- thrombocytosis or thrombocytopenia;
- erythrocytosis;
- leucocytosis;
- bleedings in patients with hemophilia;
- skin rash;
- dysmenorrheal;
- cholestatic jaundice;
- hepatitis;
- hair loss;
- increment in activity of “hepatic” transaminase;
Overdosage:
The main symptoms of overdosage are: headache, dizziness, tremor, seizures, nausea, vomiting. In case of overdosage contact your doctor or emergency room immediately.
Interactions:
Before beginning to take any new medicine tell your doctor about all other medicines that you are already taking, because some medicines may interact with each other. Some of medicines that are known to interact with Danazol are:
- Insulin. Danazol weakens the action of insulin and increases concentration of sugar in blood. It may appear to be necessary to increase insulin dosages for diabetic patients.
- Anticoagulants (blood thinners) such as warfarin (Coumadin). Danazol may increase the effect of these medicines and possibly increase the risk of severe bleeding.
- Carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Tegretol). Danazol may increase concentration of Carbamazepine.
- Cyclosporine. May increase cyclosporine levels, thus increasing risk of nephrotoxicity.
Special instructions:
- Danazol is not used as a contraceptive medicine.
- Danazol may cause dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Danazol. |
