What is it used for?
Sodium valproate is used to control seizures, particularly in primary generalised epilepsy. It may be used in all forms of epilepsy.
Sodium valproate may also be used in mania (as a mood stabiliser), migraine prevention, and trigeminal neuralgia.

Contraindications and cautions:

Use with caution in
• Decreased kidney function
• Diabetes
• Disorders of urea production in the liver (urea cycle disorders)
• History of liver disease
• Long-term inflammation of skin and some internal organs (systemic lupus erythematosus)
Not to be used in
• Active liver disease
• Family history of liver disease, particularly liver disease caused by medications
• Life long inherited blood diseases which can cause a variety of symptoms, including mental health problems (porphyrias)
This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
