Therapeutic actions: Fluconazole is one of a group of medicines called anti-fungal agents. Antifungal drugs treat infections by destroying the fungi that cause them. They each do this by attacking tiny components of the fungi - cells.

What is it used for?
Fluconazole is used to treat infections caused by fungi/yeasts. Fluconazole may also be used to stop you from getting a fungal infection.
You may be given this medicine by your doctor to treat fungal infections such as:
• thrush of the mouth or throat (mucosal infections). Thrush is commonly caused by Candida
• skin infections - e.g. athlete's foot, ringworm
• internal fungal infections caused by Candida - e.g. infections of the bloodstream, urinary tract or other body organs
• internal fungal infections caused by Cryptococcus e.g. cryptococcal meningitis and infections of other sites such as the lungs and skin.
• genital Candida infections, e.g. vaginal thrush or candidal balanitis (inflammation of the end of the penis and/or foreskin)
You may also be given fluconazole to:
• stop you from getting a fungal infection (if your immune system is not working properly) or after chemotherapy/radiotherapy.
• stop an infection caused by Cryptococcus from coming back (in AIDS patients).

Contraindications and cautions:
Do not use this medication if you are allergic to fluconazole, or similar drugs such as clotrimazole (Lotrimin), econazole (Spectazole), ketoconazole (Nizoral), miconazole (Monistat), sertaconazole (Ertaczo), sulconazole (Exelderm), terconazole (Terazol), tioconazole (Vagistat-1), or voriconazole (Vfend). Do not use fluconazole if you are also taking cisapride (Propulsid) or terfenadine (Seldane).
Before taking fluconazole, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have:
• liver disease;
• kidney disease;
• a heart rhythm disorder; or
• a personal or family history of "Long QT syndrome."
This medication may be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Fluconazole can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Side effects:

Fluconazole may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
• headache
• dizziness
• diarrhea
• stomach pain
• heartburn
• change in ability to taste food
Some side effects can be serious. If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
• upset stomach
• extreme tiredness
• unusual bruising or bleeding
• lack of energy
• loss of appetite
• pain in the upper right part of the stomach
• yellowing of the skin or eyes
• flu-like symptoms
• dark urine
• pale stools
• seizures
• rash
• hives
• itching
• swelling of the face , throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
• difficulty breathing or swallowing
If you experience a serious side effect, you should contact your doctor.

Interactions: Inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
• warfarin or coumarin drugs (to prevent blood clots)
• benzodiazepines such as midazolam (a sedative drug to calm you down)
• oral sulphonylureas such as chlorpropamide, glibenclamide, glipizide or tolbutamide (to control diabetes)
• diuretics, such as hydrochlorothiazide, used to treat fluid retention and high blood pressure
• phenytoin (used to control epilepsy)
• rifampicin or rifabutin (antibiotics)
• cyclosporin or tacrolimus (used to affect the immune response)
• theophylline (used to control asthma)
• astemizole (an antihistamine)
• zidovudine, also known as AZT (used in HIV-infected patients)
Fluconazole is not thought to interact with the oral contraceptive pill.
Tell your doctor of any medicines you are taking including those that were not prescribed for you that you may have bought.
