What is it used for?
Nizoral shampoo is used to treat and prevent fungal infections on the scalp and body, such as:
• dandruff
• a dry or greasy scaling of scalp and other parts of the body (seborrhoeic dermatitis)
• irregular white to brown patches which occur on the body and sometimes appear after being in the sun (tinea/pityriasis versicolor).
These conditions may be itchy.
Contraindications and cautions: As with most shampoos, if any gets into your eyes, bathe them gently with cold water. If you have been using a lotion or cream for a longtime, which contains a steroid (such as betamethasone or hydrocortisone), then you will need to gradually use it less and less over 2-3 weeks while you start to use Nizoral shampoo. This will stop your condition flaring up while Nizoral shampoo starts to work. Should you have any questions concerning using your steroid lotion or cream, please speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
Nizoral shampoo can be used if you are pregnant and during breast feeding.
Side effects: Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.
• Burning sensation.
• Itching (pruritus).
• Allergic inflammation of the skin (contact dermatitis).
• Dry hair.
• Oily hair.
• Discolouration of hair (rare and mainly affecting chemically-damaged or grey hair).
• Eczema.
