What is it used for?
Pregnyl is human chorionic gonadotrophin, a hormone found naturally in the body. Pregnyl is used in fertility treatment as it has an action similar to that of a natural luteinising hormone (LH). Pregnyl is used in both men and women for the following conditions;
Women - Pregnyl is needed to help produce eggs along with other fertility drugs in medically assisted reproduction programmes.
Men - Pregnyl is needed for the production of sperm and for other hormonal or testicular problems.
Contraindications and cautions:
Pregnyl should not be given to you if:
* you have a tumour in your ovaries, breasts, hypothalamus, testicles or pituitary glands
* you have a known sensitivity to Pregnyl or any of the ingredients of the product
* your fertility problem is such that Pregnyl will not help such as certain genital or anatomical abnormalities
* you have unexplained vaginal bleeding
* you are pregnant
* your partner has not had a semen analysis
You must inform your doctor if you have or ever have had any of the following conditions:
* a tumour in either your ovaries, testicles or pituitary glands
* unexplained vaginal bleeding
* Other diseases or events that you suspect may have contributed to your condition
* High blood pressure
* Epilepsy
* Migraine headaches
* Kidney problems
* Heart problems
You should be aware that in pregnancies occurring after treatment with gonadotropic preparations (such as Pregnyl), there is an increased risk of multiple births. Such pregnancies often have problems.
Side effects:
You can feel some adverse effects:
* As part of treatment to stimulate ovulation, overstimulation of your ovaries may occur. This may be noticed as pain in the abdomen. If you are troubled with pain in the abdomen or pelvis, contact your doctor without delay. Other symptoms of can include indigestion, nausea, vomiting, weight gain, shortness of breath, reduced amounts of urine, diarrhoea and painful breasts.
* In pregnancies occurring after treatment with this product there is an increased risk multiple births. Such pregnancies often have problems.
* Skin rashes have been reported rarely.
* Males may have some water and salt retention usually obvious by swollen ankles or feet.
Interactions: Other medicines may influence the effect of Pregnyl or vice-versa. Inform your doctor if you are taking (or intend to take) other medicines, including those that you buy without a prescription from a pharmacy, supermarket or healthfood store. |
