What is it used for?
Premarin is used for treatment of:
- climacteric syndrome (hot flushes, excessive sweating, sleep disorder, irritation, depression, atrophic urethritis and vaginitis);
- post menopausal osteoporosis (bone loss);
- as a preventive treatment of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular system disorders in menopause;
- primary ovarian dysfunction;
- dysfunctional uterine bleedings;
- hypogonadism in women;
- conditions after ovariectomy;
- some inoperable types of breast cancer;
- inoperable prostate cancer;

Contraindications and cautions:
- hypersensitivity to any ingredient of Premarin;
- pregnancy and breast-feeding;
- known or suspected estrogen-dependant malignant neoplasms or breast-cancer;
- unusual or undiagnosed genital or uterine bleeding;
- active phase of thrombophlebitis and thrombembolia;

Patients with the following health conditions must be closely supervised when receiving treatment with Premarin:
- familial hyperlipoproteinemia;
- pancreatitis;
- endometriosis;
- gall bladder illness (especially cholelithiasis) in medical history;
- severe case of hepatic insufficiency;
- jaundice (including in past medical history);
- hepatic porphyria;
- leiomyoma;
- hypercalcemia, associated with bone metastasis of breast cancer;

Side effects:
- menstruation intensity change;
- spotting;
- amenorrhea;
- nausea;
- vomiting;
- gaseous distention;
- epigastric pain;
- holestatic jaundice;
- pancreatitis;
- weight gain or loss;
- breast pain or tenderness;
- changes of libido;
- headache or migraine;
- dizziness;
- chorea;
- changes in vision;
- melanosis;
- chloasma;
- hair loss;
- skin rash;
- pulmonary or venous thromboembolism;
- swelling;
- porphyria aggravation;

Interactions:
Certain medicines may affect Premarin, so it is recommended to tell your doctor about all other medicines that you use, including herbal products, before you begin to receive therapy with Premarin. Some of the medicines that may interact with Premarin are:
- ketoconazole (Nizoral) or itraconazole (Sporanox);
- rifampin (Rifadin, Rifater, Rifamate, Rimactane);
- blood thinners such as warfarin (Coumadin);
- thyroid medications such as levothyroxine (Synthroid);
- insulin or diabetes medicine taken by mouth;
- seizure medicines such as phenytoin (Dilantin), carbamazepine (Tegretol), felbamate (Felbatol), oxcarbazepine (Trileptal), or primidone (Mysoline);
- barbiturates such as amobarbital (Amytal), butabarbital (Butisol), mephobarbital (Mebaral), secobarbital (Seconal), or phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton);
- antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil, Etrafon), amoxapine (Ascendin), clomipramine (Anafranil), desipramine (Norpramin), doxepin (Sinequan), imipramine (Janimine, Tofranil), nortriptyline (Pamelor), protriptyline (Vivactil), or trimipramine (Surmontil).

Special instructions:
- When using Premarin there may appear intolerance to contact lenses.
- Smoking is not recommended when using Premarin, it may increase the risk of blood clots (especially in women older than 35 years old).
- Premarin may cause dark skin patches on your face. Exposure to the sun may make these patches darker, and you may need to avoid prolonged sun exposure and sunlamps.
