What is it used for?
Bromocriptine is used to treat amenorrhea, a condition in which the menstrual period does not occur; infertility (inability to get pregnant) in women; abnormal discharge of milk from the breast; hypogonadism; Parkinson's disease; and acromegaly, a condition in which too much growth hormone is in the body.
Bromocriptine is also used to treat certain tumors in men and women, a condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome; cocaine addiction; and a painful breast condition. Talk with your doctor about the possible risks of using this drug for your condition
Contraindications and cautions:
Before taking bromocriptine,
• tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to bromocriptine, ergotamine, or any other drugs.
• tell your doctor if you have or have ever had kidney, heart, or liver disease, a heart attack, angina (chest pain), mental illness, or circulation problems in your fingers in cold weather.
• tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking bromocriptine, call your doctor.
• you should know that this drug may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this drug affects you.
• remember that alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by this drug.
Side effects: Bromocriptine may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
• dizziness
• upset stomach
• headache
• fatigue
• vomiting
• constipation
If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
• swelling of the feet or ankles
• fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeat
• confusion
• watery discharge from nose
Interactions: Tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially erythromycin (E-Mycin); levodopa (Sinemet, Larodopa); medications for high blood pressure, migraine headaches, or depression; oral contraceptives; tranquilizers; and vitamins. |
